Your engulfing sadness
Makes it a sacrifice
To reach out to you
Leading me to stay away
Out of self-protection

And you feel sadness
About my distance
Adding another layer of darkness
Threatening to consume me
Whenever I call

I miss our connection
Which was shattered
When I was eleven
And which I tried
To reconstruct
Since then
To no avail

At the very least
I want to sing with you
Before I never
Hear your voice again

And so I go through
This dance of discomfort
On a weekly basis
And perhaps will keep doing so
Until it is no longer an option
