A new systematic review proves that dance is one of the most effective methods for healing pain. But how can you dance when you’re in chronic pain? This 2 hour workshop introduces you to the groundbreaking Dancing with Pain® method, teaching you how to reconceptualize dance so that you can use it to heal yourself. Method founder Loolwa Khazzoom – who healed herself from debilitating chronic pain – will teach you the principles, practices, and science behind this method, including the following:
– the difference between acute pain and chronic pain
– how, when approached mindfully, dance can rewire your brain and nervous system, to reduce or eliminate pain
– how to reframe pain/ease and mobility/disability as being fluid instead of stagnant
– how to shift from the “I can’t” to “how can I” mindset, so as to adapt dance (and daily living) to your body in every moment
– how to reclaim joy and power in your body, moving safely and comfortably
– how to create a dance practice that is uniqely customized to your changing needs and abilities
In addition, Khazzoom will share her dramatic story of how she went from being alternately bedridden, housebound, and wheelchair bound, over the course of a decade, to being able to bike 30 miles at a shot, pain-free, through regular practice of this dance method.
This workshop will be about 70 minutes of talking and about 50 minutes of a sample dance class. The dance class portion will begin with soft and soothing music and a guided body scan, then will gradually flow into increasingly energetic music, then flow back down to gentle and meditative music. Khazzoom faciltates the class by talking throughout, pulling your attention away from pain and guiding you to ensure that you are dancing in a highly-customized and safe way for your own unique body, and always staying out of your pain zones.
In the interest of participant safety, there is no touch involved, and workshop size is limited, to give ample body space around each participant. In addition, in this and all Dancing with Pain® programs, you are recognized as the supreme authority on your body and actively invited to take care of yourself as needed, at any given time.
Bring a yoga or cushioned mat to class, and dress in layers, to ensure optimal comfort.
