Kitsap, WA<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Amidst the global pandemic,\u00a0volunteer cast and crew drove in from across Washington state,\u00a0donning masks and practicing social distancing, to film<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>against the backdrop of the stunning Olympic Peninsula forest<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>for<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Iraqis in Pajamas’<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>music video,<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>“<\/span><\/span><\/span>Cancer Is My Engine<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.” The video tells\u00a0the story of front woman Loolwa Khazzoom’<\/span><\/span><\/span>s choice to reject the conventional thyroidectomy <\/span><\/span><\/span>treatment<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>for thyroid<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>cancer, despite medical and financial\u00a0pressure. Khazzoom instead chose to approach<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>the diagnosis<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>as an opportunity for radically transforming her life – such as by going vegan and practicing numerous forms of mind-body medicine.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

After cold-stopping the growth of the nodules for years, through these measures, Khazzoom\u00a0moved to Washington state<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>from California, returned to her lost love of music,<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>and launched her band – which combines ancient Iraqi Jewish prayers with original alternative rock.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Immediately following,\u00a0the\u00a0thyroid\u00a0nodules began shrinking.\u00a0Through magical realism and metaphor, the music video reveals how, by listening to her inner voice, Khazzoom\u00a0self-healed<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>through her actual<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>voice,\u00a0by singing – the ability of which ironically may have been destroyed by a thyroidectomy, given the proximity of the thyroid\u00a0gland\u00a0and vocal chords.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

<\/b><\/span>The video begins with Khazzoom<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>standing\u00a0at the edge of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a cliff,\u00a0singing\u00a0the opening line of the song, \u201cCancer is my engine.\u201d As\u00a0she<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>sings<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it, a candle is lit by\u00a0her<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>voice. Suddenly<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>she is\u00a0transported to a forest, where\u00a0she is\u00a0searching in the dark with the light of that candle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She comes across a bear\u00a0– representing Khazzoom’s mother –\u00a0and picks it up, then continues on her quest. An insurance agent and doctor appear and begin chasing Khazzoom\u00a0through the forest. As\u00a0she<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>runs<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>away from them, carrying the bear, she comes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to a fork in the road\u00a0–<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with the doctor on one side and the insurance agent on the other, coming toward\u00a0her.\u00a0She<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>stops, looks<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in each direction, then runs<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>forward, through the part of the forest that has no path, heading toward the light.\u00a0She<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>keeps<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>running until\u00a0she<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>comes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to a cliff<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and jumps off it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

She<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>lands<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in the middle of\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>drumming circle<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and starts<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>dancing wildly.\u00a0A few scenes later, she is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>drumming\u00a0in the middle\u00a0of the circle, and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>everyone else is dancing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>around her.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Both\u00a0circles represent the pivotal importance of music and dance in Khazzoom’s healing.\u00a0The video then starts to shift from magical realism and metaphor to real life shots, with the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>band<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>playing music in a vegetable patch in Khazzoom’s garden, representing Khazzoom’s regimen of juicing daily and eating a whole-foods, plant-based diet.\u00a0The video ends with\u00a0Khazzoom<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>standing on the edge of the cliff and singing the last words of the song, in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the original a cappella Iraqi\u00a0Jewish\u00a0prayer<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that exalts the power of the Divine.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>
