The Looking Glass

What if the real tragedy isn’t ignorance, but the refusal to wonder?

There is a particular sadness in realizing that no amount of love, knowledge, experience, or possibility can open a mind that is unwilling to look beyond what it already believes it knows. We see it in our most intimate relationships, and we see it playing out across the world: the same narrowing of vision, the same certainty, the same refusal to imagine that there might be something just beyond the edges of our understanding. And I find myself mourning that.

Because when curiosity dies, something vital dies with it. This poem came from that ache—and from the wonder of knowing how much beauty, creativity, and possibility remain just beyond the edges of where someone is willing to look.

This post includes a spoken word video, photos of the original handwritten journal entry where I wrote this poem, and the typed up words of the poem. Enjoy!
