Dance Heals Pain: New Study Comes Alive in Local Events

A new systematic review, “Dance for Chronic Pain Conditions,” proves that dance reduces pain and improves the experience of it. A series of local events now bring this study to life.

Kitsap County, WA – Over 100 million Americans suffer from unresolved pain. That statistic used to include Loolwa Khazzoom, who was alternately bedridden, housebound, and wheelchair-bound, from the mid 1990s to the mid 2000s, following a hit-and-run, head-on car collision. Then in 2004, she intuitively discovered that by reconceptualizing dance, she could use it to heal herself. Through daily practice of her innovative dance method, she became able to to bike up to 30 miles at a shot, pain-free.

Drawing from this experience, she trademarked Dancing with Pain®, with a set of innovative principles and practices customized for people living with and healing from chronic pain, and began teaching it at venues throughout California and New York. Based on before/after questionnaires from and conversations with students, Khazzoom discovered that the method had a 96% rate of efficacy in reducing or eliminating pain and increasing mobility. One student even canceled hip surgery, after she was suddenly pain-free following a Dancing with Pain® class, and instead began dancing regularly. Find out about the science behind the method in this article.

Over the years, Dancing with Pain® was featured in top media, including The New York Times, ABC News, and Fox News. After a decade-plus hiatus from teaching this method, Khazzoom is back at it, with workshops scheduled througout Western Washington, and more on the way. These workshops come on the heels of a new systematic review verifying that, yes, dance does heal pain, as Khazzoom herself discovered, nearly 20 years ago. Through her company, KHAZZOOM Healing Arts, Khazzoom is collaborating with the lead scientist of that study and a leading pain management specialist, for an online event discussing the science, biomechanics, and practice of dance for pain relief, “Don’t Fight Your Pain. Dance with It!
